A fresh, new page!

When I was at school (yes, despite the grey hair I can remember that far back!) I always loved starting a new workbook. Opening the cover and making a new crease at the spine was something of a guilty pleasure for primary school me. That first, smooth page completely free of indentation meant my writing had to be perfect, no mistakes could be made coz the smudges made by a rubber would taint the whole book. The care and love that I put into that initial sheet was soon forgotten as I turned over but that didn’t matter because the first page was perfection. I know, I know you’re wondering why on earth I am waffling on about something that happened nearly the ‘meaning of life’ years ago (geddit Douglas Adams fans?) well there is a good reason. I have been inspired to start a fresh, new page with my blog! What is the cause of this rush of blood to my head? One thing I can say is that it was something healthy, or rather it was Organic. Last night my close buddy and I went to the city, yep we actually went out to do something grown up. Our

Happy St David’s Day!!!

Being one eighth Welsh I am pleased to wish everyone a happy day today, I just wish I could add ‘sunny’ to that but I can’t – the weather here in Devon is definitely soggy! Yesterday, February 29 2016 was a bonus day, an extra 24 hours to use wisely. So many people I spoke to did something special to make the most of the day, but I have to admit I didn’t. I went to work and had a normal day doing normal things. For me normal is good, normal works, it keeps me steady so I have no regrets about not having a special day. Today, 1 March is another thing, today is going to be special. I’m meeting a special friend for a long overdue catch up, I’m seeing another special friend to run our after school Art Club making things for special Mum’s this weekend and then I’m spending the evening with the two special men in my life. Come to think of it, is today special? No, it’s normal ! Wow, I must count my blessings coz every normal day is a special one for me. I’m a VERY lucky girl! Take care until my next rambling,

It’s been far too long…

… since I have blogged. Circumstances (some good, some bad) have managed to bring chaos to my life in recent months. Why? Because there’s not been a calm in the maelstrom to help to settle things down! Sewing is my calm, not the day to day ‘normal’ stuff, it’s the other type that really helps to level me. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy all forms of sewing its just that free design is my ‘thang’. To take a flat piece of fabric, make a few cuts and stitches here and there to produce a 3-D creation is cathartic and justifying which, for me, brings calm. Last Friday I was in my workroom just finishing a cuppa mid commission when I decided to clear the decks, I even hoovered and polished! I felt really excited and set to with my pencil and tape measure. Frantic scribblings were closely followed by me grabbing some scrap lining fabric, wadding, a zip and some bias binding. Next I was threading up my sewing machine. Snip, Snip, pin, whizz – I didn’t stop for a breather – whizz, snip, flip and………..relax – I was finished!!!!!!! The result? A curvy, padded make up bag. Was it perfect? Of course not,

Those Lazy, Hazy Days of Summer…

… are eluding me just now because when the sun comes out (or rather if it comes out) so does school, which means I have the company of my seven year old for six weeks. Now, don’t get me wrong it is wonderful to share those memory making times – the trips to the beach dipping toes into the surf, playing in grassy poppy filled fields and licking ice creams – unfortunately, that’s not my reality. Try forgetting the jumper/raincoat and getting stuck in a sudden shower which, far from being refreshing chills to the bone or imagine being attacked by a tenacious wasp as you tuck into the only sandwich that wasn’t completely trampled into the sand. Got it? You Have? Welcome to my summer! I really must try to up my game and think positive after all we are three weeks in to the holidays so essentially the new school year is fast approaching. The end of August will bring the trip to the shoe shop (and the ensuing heart attack when presented with the bill), the arguments about trying on the uniform bought post a mega growth spurt in the last week of term only to find another one

Isn’t Life Funny

My mum always told me that time would move more quickly the older I got and I’m discovering that she was quite correct. It seems like just a blink of an eye since Christmas but thankfully the grey months from the start of 2015 have been spirited away and replaced by sunny, chilly mornings which turn into almost balmy afternoons (if you’re out of the wind that is!). My studio is bathed in light all day and I feel very lucky! In fact, good fortune has been knocking at the Tall Amy door this month. Orders are flowing in, my design mojo is doing it’s ‘thang’ and plans for more workshops and dressmaking courses are afoot PLUS a website update is planned to ensure that all new lines and fabrics are on full view. In the meantime though, I will try to be less neglectful of those of you that follow my random wittering. Keep your eyes peeled coz you just don’t know what is around the corner! Take care, B x

Stop Press: Tall Amy’s Studio is now Open!

Phew, things have been really busy since the renovations of the studio began early on in February. Since picking up the keys on the 1st it’s been vacuumed, cleaned, vacuumed, painted, vacuumed, ‘wood-worked’, vacuumed, painted again and vacuumed all before the furniture, materials and equipment was moved in! If I never see another dusty, hairy carpet square it’ll be too soon, but we’re there – all finished! The past month’s frenzy drew to a close last Tuesday in time for the start of Tall Amy’s Workshops, which kicked off the next day with two lots of Lampshade Making followed by Cushion Making on Thursday. Each group of of eager beavers threw themselves into crafting and conversation accompanied by some rather tasty cakes and lots of laughter. I know that new skills were learnt and existing knowledge expanded resulting in fabulous, handcrafted items going home with each person (today’s pic is my group of Cushion Makers). Thank you to all crafters for coming along and making each session wonderfully productive and so much fun. I’m already looking forward to the March and April dates covering Cushions and Lampshades once again plus Bunting Making. Tidying up after each workshop was also enjoyable as I reflected on the events

Hands Up if You Remember Record Breakers!

I do, especially Roy Castle signing the theme song ‘Dedication’. Has that transported you back to after school telly munching a ‘Topic’ bar or even a ‘Lovely’ pud? If it has think of the tune, and then sing (or if you’re tone deaf like me think-sing) the following:  ‘Renovation, renovation, renovation, that’s what it needs. If you wanna be the best, if you want to treat the rest, th~en renovation’s what it needs!’ That’s the mantra that was going through my mind every morning last week. Why? Well, I’m pleased to announce that Tall Amy is the fully signed up key-holder of The Studio, 1 Imperial House, Shutterton Estate, Dawlish! And, as such cleaning, painting and sorting dominated my ‘To Do’ list for the week with aching and sleeping following close behind. The result? A freshly decorated work space (complete with newly delivered furniture) which is awaiting the craftsman carpentry skills of Alex. He is the wonder artisan who interprets my musings, gabblings and terrible sketchings to successfully create reality from my imaginings! Once my purpose built cutting bench and fabric storage areas are in perfect place you’d expect the studio to be complete. My husband certainly does and I do

The Search for Inspiration…

… is an eternal one, with a few light bulb moments on the way. That’s my definition anyway as its something that doesn’t come easily for me. Oh how I envy those seemingly smug crafters who are always positively brimming over with ideas and fab new projects. Don’t get me wrong, I am always able to design and make a bag from even the sketchiest of briefs (verbal not wearable!) or any other item that Tall Amy is known for, its the small, pretty and daintily embroidered makes that I always struggle with. The reality is though (and I have this on good authority) that SSC’s put in lots of research time i.e. looking at media and books, other people’s creations as well as life around them. I thought about this over the weekend, had a peek at my latest sewing mag, watched TGBSB Class of 2014 and, after wiping the condensation off the window peered out into the world. Oh Joy!, I had an epiphany and realised that after all this time I can come up with an idea of something to sew on a Sunday afternoon in front of the fire. A couple of hours and sore fingertips later I had

That Friday Feeling!

It seems to have been a long week and I am itching for the weekend to start. I’m blaming my malaise on the weather, although its actually quite sunny this morning. It certainly makes a change from the grey drizzle and wind that has been hugging the house for the last few days. I’ve really been in need of colour and brightness, hence the picture today, which I find satisfyingly uplifting! Paint is on my mind as well though as I will be starting to put my mark on Tall Amy’s new studio next week. Are bold colours, striking design and innovative use of materials in the mix? Most definitely…….NOT! Don’t get me wrong I love a decoration statement as much as the next girl, but I just don’t think I could work amidst a messy pallette. My work space will be light and calming – actually, white with a feature area of Tall Amy pink, I reckon I’ll let the fabrics give the anarchic tone to the room! Right, back to my machine – not really, I’m off to meet a colleague for a coffee to discuss some project ideas so its more of ‘work with benefits’! Have a
